Five senior managers of western-Canadian charities will receive
fully paid sabbatical years after being named as recipients of 2004
Muttart Fellowships. Each will leave their agency for the year and
undertake a special project of interest or concern to the charitable
sector.
This year’s Fellows are:
Germaine Dechante, Executive Director, Child and
Adolescent Services Association, of Edmonton will be researching
the issues and history of children's mental health in Alberta. Her work is in the pre-publication phase.

Danica Frazer, Executive Director, McMan Youth,
Family and Community Services Association, Edmonton. Ms. Frazer
will be conducting research into strategic response models for government
funded charities.
Kelly Sloan is executive director of the YWCA of Edmonton. Ms. Sloan examined the relationship between the executive director and the board of directors of not-for-profit organizations. In addition to a comprehensive literature review, Ms. Sloan interviewed seven different organizations who have a self-described successful relationship and describes her findings in her book, ‘The Board and Executive Director: Developing and Nourishing an Effective Relationship’. Ms. Sloan describes the common themes that emerged that are critical to the success of this relationship: trust and respect, job functions that support each other, organizational climate and effectiveness, certain leadership qualities, and emotional intelligence. The book contains practical strategies to implement changes in these areas as well as a list of resources relevant to the subject.
