What is it?
The Foundation recognizes the difficulty, in times of tight budgets, of making money available to provide training to staff and key volunteers. However, often this training is the best way to help improve an agency’s effectiveness.
The Foundation makes available bursaries to pay for the tuition or registration costs of short-term courses, workshops and other training opportunities. The Foundation will consider applications for attendance at conferences provided the conference has a strong knowledge and skill-building component.
A charity may choose to send staff members or key volunteers to such training sessions. The Foundation will limit the number of bursaries available for any particular course or event.
In some cases, the Foundation will make a training grant to a charity or a group of charities to bring a trainer to their organization(s). We are more receptive to training requests that may serve the needs of several charities.
Which Charities are eligible to apply?
Grants under this program are available to social-service charities in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
What’s available?
The Training and Bursary Program is a small grants program. Individual bursaries are awarded for less than $1,000, and only in exceptional circumstances will the Foundation consider requests for individual bursaries that exceed this amount. In cases where the Foundation does award an individual bursary that exceeds $1,000, the Foundation will apply special conditions to the grant, these may include a return-service commitment or a plan to disseminate learnings from the course to others within and outside the applicant charity.
Training grants may exceed the $1,000 maximum but should not exceed $5,000. In awarding a training grant the Foundation will anticipate some contribution from the applicant or applicants to the cost of the proposed training.
What won’t be considered?
Under this program, we will not normally consider requests for:
- costs incurred (or committed to) before the award of the grant;
- ongoing bursaries that lead to a complete course of study;
- training that is required for mandatory certification or accreditation; and
- scholarships, prizes or awards
Preparing your application
If you are applying for a bursary, click here ( PDF - 2.1 MB) for a copy of the special application form. The form lists the additional information we require.
We attempt to decide on bursary applications within ten working days of receipt. However, you should submit your application to us at least three weeks before the course or conference start date to provide sufficient time for review of your request. If the application is received after the registration deadline for the course, or you have already started the course, the bursary will probably not be awarded.
If you are applying for a training grant, please follow this process:
We strongly suggest you call us first and speak to a member of our granting staff. This will help determine whether you’re eligible for a grant. You can reach us at (780) 425-9616 or, outside of Edmonton, toll-free at (877) 788-5437.
Now, download a copy of the application cover sheet, available by clicking here ( PDF - 533 KB). Complete the application and attach it to the front of your application.
Next, prepare a preliminary application – four or five pages describing your agency and its history, the type of training you propose, when and where it will be delivered, who will receive the training and how the training is likely to increase the effectiveness of your organization.
If you have not applied to the Foundation before, you should also attach proof that your agency has adopted the Code of Ethical Fundraising and Financial Accountability. Information about the Code is available here.
Send the application cover sheet and your preliminary application, along with a copy of your most recent financial statements, to the Foundation at Suite 1150, 10060 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta T5J 3R8.
When we receive your application
When your application is received, it will be reviewed by Foundation staff. If the application falls within the Foundation’s funding guidelines, a member of our granting staff will contact you and gather additional information.
The staff report will be considered by the Board of Directors of the Foundation, who will decide whether or not to award a grant.
