The Council on Foundations
is a U.S.-based organization that brings together grant-making foundations of all kinds - private, community and corporate.Philanthropic Foundations Canada is the new name of Private Foundations Canada.In Edmonton, the Edmonton Community Foundation serves donors and charities through a variety of programs.In Calgary, The Calgary Foundation is Calgary's community foundation and serves donors and charities through a variety of programs.In Saskatoon, The Saskatoon Foundation serves people in the community through a variety of grants programs.


INFORMATION FOR & ABOUT CHARITIES
The Canada Customs and Revenue Agency registers and regulates Canadian charities. Information about becoming a charity, and the rules to follow once you're registered, can be found here. Want to know if an organization is a registered charity? Check the CCRA database here. Imagine Canada (formerly the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy) operates programs to speak out for Canadian charities. The Centre also developed and administers the Code of Ethical Fundraising and Financial Accountability. Click here. Some Alberta charities are required to register under the Charitable Fundraising Act. Information about the act is found here. CharityVillage is a rich source of information about Canadian charities.The Resource Centre for Voluntary Organizations is housed at Grant MacEwan College. It provides resource material of many kinds - at the College and through the "On the Road" program funded by The Muttart Foundation. RCVO also distributes Muttart Fellowship projects.Volunteer Calgary supports the voluntary sector through a number of programs that go well beyond the work of a volunteer centre. It is the other distributor of work from Muttart Fellows.The Charity Commission for England and Wales is often held up as the type of regulator that should exist in Canada.The Guardian is an English newspaper that does an incredible job of covering issues affecting the voluntary sector in the United Kingdom. VOLUNTARY SECTOR INITIATIVE
The Voluntary Sector Initiative was established by the federal government and the voluntary sector to look at new ways of working together.As part of the Initiative, CCRA has recently issued a draft clarification of the rules governing business activities by charities. Read the proposal here and submit your comments to CCRA.

IMPACS - the Institute for Media, Policy and Civil Society - is active in a number of areas, from working on advocacy issues affecting charities to training charities in communications issues.Ginsler & Associates has developed an impressive primer on public-policy tools that can be used by charities and not-for-profit organizations. Check it out here. The Alliance for Nonprofit Management brings together funders and consultants concerned about building capacity in the not-for-profit sector.Law Now is a publication of the University of Alberta Faculty of Extension. Through a grant from The Muttart Foundation, it has assembled articles and links of specific interest to the sector. Start from here. Arthur Drache, Q.C., one of Canada's leading experts on charity law, has assembled a number of articles and papers on issues affecting the charitable sector in connection with a course he teaches at Queen's University.
