In fall 2010, the Foundation released a discussion paper entitled 'In the Best Interests of Children and Families: A Discussion of Early Childhood Education and Care in Alberta'.  The paper was developed to stimulate discussion on how Alberta might best approach the funding and delivery of early childhood education and care in Alberta.  Following release of that paper, the Foundation, with support from its local partners, hosted five regional forums across the province to consider the ideas presented in that paper.  This current report summarizes the key themes that emerged from those discussions and provides a synthesis of participants' thoughts and responses to the discussion paper.

In conjunction with the release of this discussion paper, the Foundation held a discussion on December 3rd, 2010 to allow key stakeholders in the Edmonton area the opportunity to consider the paper and begin a broader dialogue on the options it presents for advancing the funding and delivery of early childhood education and care. Additional discussions will take place in Grande Prairie, Calgary, Red Deer, and Medicine Hat/Lethbridge to engage others in these important discussions.

Are there too many non-profit organizations in Alberta duplicating services?

A "think piece" by Mark Holmgren seeks to respond to the suggestion that there are too many non-profit organizations in Alberta.

Recently, there have been some suggestions (mainly from government) that there are too many non-profit organizations in Alberta. Are those suggestions valid? Should there be some control over who can form associations? Or is government's role simply to decide which organizations it will fund? Mark Holmgren has written a thoughtful paper on the topic. Perspectives on Fundraising

Research from Perspectives on Fundraising, by Imagine Canada and commissioned by the Muttart Foundation, looks at charity returns submitted to the Canadian Revenue Agency. Research results showed low-level cost of fundraising percentages for most charities, but also showed that many charities are still not completing their T3010Bs correctly.
